A Song in the Air

A friend of mine made an interesting point on her blog today – if this world were perfect, if mankind were wholly sinless, we would have had no need for Christmas. God would not have had to send His Son to die for a spotless innocent people. He would have had no need to sacrifice of Himself, if Adam & Eve had not disobeyed His instruction in the Garden of Eden.

Of course, if we were without sin, then we would have the constant experience of pure, unbroken fellowship with our Creator. But on the other hand, we would miss out on the awe and amazement of knowing just how much He loves each one of us. We would never know the joy of Christ’s birth, the sorrow of His death, and the miracle of being grafted into His family and being justified through His blood. What an awe-filled gift He has given to us, a sinful and self-centered people who so often reject and ignore Him!

Truly, this is reason to rejoice!

There’s a song in the air! There’s a star in the sky!
There’s a mother’s deep prayer and a baby’s low cry!
And the star rains its fire while the beautiful sing,
For the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King!

There’s a tumult of joy o’er the wonderful birth,
For the virgin’s sweet Boy is the Lord of the earth.
Ay! the star rains its fire while the beautiful sing,
For the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King!

In the light of that star lie the ages impearled;
And that song from afar has swept over the world.
Every hearth is aflame, and the beautiful sing
In the homes of the nations that Jesus is King!

We rejoice in the light, and we echo the song
That comes down through the night from the heavenly throng.
Ay! we shout to the lovely evangel they bring,
And we greet in His cradle our Savior and King!
