God, Make Me Thankful

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God … casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:6-7).

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

We will have cares in this world. We will face the consequences of sin, whether our own specifically or of sin in general. We will experience sickness and annoyances and inconveniences. We will live through major trials and come face to face with lifelong difficulties. But do we cast those cares at His feet?

More than that, are we thankful? Do we really trust that God is always good, or do we make Him “prove Himself” before we choose to be thankful for however He has led (an unforeseen disability, a flat tire, a missed flight)?  Do we truly believe that He loves us unconditionally and orders each one of our steps according to His perfect will, or do we grumble and stomp our feet at the first sign of an “inconvenient” difficulty?

He cares for us! He cares for you and for me. He planned our lives out, every single moment of them, from the beginning of time! He knew us by name before we were formed in our mothers’ wombs. He loves us! And, though He sends cares our way, yet He wants us to throw those cares back at His feet and trust Him. He wants us to learn to be truly thankful for everything He sends our way. He wants us to believe in His goodness whether we perceive our circumstances as good or bad. Because He cares for us.

He wants us to humble ourselves, to realize that we can not carry all our cares by our own strength, and to cast all those cares at His feet. Because He cares for us. He wants us to trust Him in everything (health, finances, work, family), believing that He is leading and guiding in love, and bring everything (good and bad) to Him in prayer, with a heart of genuine thankfulness. Because He cares for us.

God, make us thankful.
