Forgiven!

God’s forgiveness is utterly incomprehensible.

Consider that, before we come to Christ and receive His cleansing and covering of blood, we are worse enemies of God the Father than Osama bin Laden was of the USA. We are more wicked, more heinous in His sight, than any terrorist could be to our country.

And yet, when we come humbly before Him, acknowledging our sinfulness and pleading His cleansing, He forgives every single one of our trespasses against Him. Our account is wiped clean. Not even the slightest accusation remains; we are counted righteous and worthy before Him, through the blood sacrifice of His Son!

And His forgiveness is not a one-time thing. Even covered in the blood of His Son, we still choose to turn our backs on Him and reject His sacrifice, as we seek our own interests and refuse to give glory to Him through our every word and deed. We are still human, still living in un-glorified bodies in an un-glorified earth. And we still sin, over and over again. As the apostle Paul wrote in his epistle to the Romans:“For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing” (Romans 7:19).

We are still only sinners, saved by the grace of God.

And so, God’s forgiveness is granted over and over again to those who call on His name. The apostle John tells us that, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). He faithfully forgives us as we truly repent of our sinfulness! Scripture tells us even more of this amazing forgiveness:

As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12).

“Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool(Isaiah 1:18).

“And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more(Jeremiah 31:34).

“He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea(Micah 7:19).

What a merciful, compassionate God we have! Do you know that forgiveness, that utter cleansing that He offers to all? Have you been washed clean through His blood, covered with His garment of righteousness? Do you claim His promise of forgiveness on a daily basis as you walk with Him, confessing before Him your unrighteousness and failure to glorify Him as you should? In Christ alone is the only way to know true peace and forgiveness, to find full freedom from guilt, to overcome sin through His power.

There is a way for sin to be forgiven; there is a way prepared for you and me.
There is a way that leads a soul to heaven; that way is Christ the sinner’s perfect plea.

Look unto Him whose power can cleanse and save your soul;
Look unto Him whose blood can set you free.
Look unto Him whose sacrifice can make you whole;
Then you will know the love of Calvary.

  1. very encouranging post Elizabeth. When I first saw people's statuses on facebook about this man being killed I didn't know what to think except it was one of those souls that died and went to hell—My sins were as bad as Bin Ladden's sins in GOD's eyes—that why I couldn't post the “celelbration” of his death…instead I am saddened that he had to die without know Christ
