I’ll be honest, it’s been a rough few weeks. Nothing too crazy or serious, just a lot of little things that have had me stressed and worn out. Things that have me tempted to worry (and I can’t say I haven’t given in to that a few times). But we all have those weeks… or months…. or years even. Right? When things aren’t going our way. When we keep hitting one hurdle after another. But you know what? Those things don’t really matter.
Sure, it feels like life is about to swallow us whole sometimes, just like the fish swallowed Jonah in one big gulp. It feels like we’re trying to wade through an angry storm-tossed sea, just desperate for Christ to calm the wind and quiet the waves.
But it’s not about the waves. It’s not about the storms of life. It’s not even about that huge fish just waiting to swallow you whole. It’s about the One who is watching you carefully, watching every baby step you make, every inch you move through life. And life is not about our plans anyway. It’s about what He has in mind for us. When we feel like life isn’t going our way, we’re right! It’s going His way.
Because He never promises that life will go how we want it to. He promises that He has a plan for us, a plan of His own careful design, crafted especially for each individual, formed with purpose and with love and with good intent. And through those plans, He keeps His eye on us. And not the way a mother watches her little toddler; no, we can never walk outside of His line of sight! He can never be distracted by something and take His gaze off us. He never grows tired or weary of watching us. He never forgets what we are doing, is never surprised by what comes into our lives. He has a detailed, specific plan for each one of our lives, and He is watching and guiding each of us through those plans every single baby step of the way!
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
(Psalm 32:8; Jeremiah 29:11)
He watches over us, always, at all times in all places. The seas may be calm or rough, the winds may whisper or roar, the hurdles may stub our toes or bring us flat on our faces – but He watches us. He guides us. Our God who never slumbers or sleeps keeps His eye on us. What a reason to trust Him!
I trust in God, I know He cares for me,
On mountain bleak or on the stormy sea;
Tho’ billows roll, He keeps my soul,
My heavn’ly Father watches over me.
