Master, the Tempest Is Raging!

Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side... And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, 'Save us, Lord; we are perishing.' And he said to them, 'Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?' Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, 'What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?' Matthew 8:18, 23-27   Praying peace for you in the midst of crazy [...Read More]

God is still at work!

A lot of people believe that God created the world. I hope you're one of them. {If you're not, go read Genesis 1.} But a lot of people also believe that, after creation, He left the world to run on its own. That life's progression is left to chance, or fate. That we're in control of our own destinies. I disagree. I believe that God is still involved in this world. I believe that He cares for every single part of our universe moment-by-moment. I believe that He is a "hands-on" God, that He is constantly working in our lives. How do I know? Psalm 65:6-13 [HCSB]: You establish the mountains by Your power, robed with strength.  You silence the roar of the seas, the roar of their [...Read More]

I Am Wonderfully Made!

Raise your hand if you ever feel like whining or complaining about being sick. *waves hand wildly* I've been dealing with a chronic illness (for which there is treatment but no cure) for about five years now. And lately I've had a whole laundry list of "nuisance" problems to deal with as well. And I haven't felt the slightest bit like being cheerful in the midst of it all. Just ask my husband - I've complained. I've whined. I've felt sorry for myself. Don't we all do that? Whether you're dealing with a long-term illness or something as simple as springtime allergies, isn't it so easy to complain about it? To wonder why God is allowing you to feel so lousy? To be preoccupied and miserably [...Read More]

All Creatures of Our God and King

"Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them." Psalm 69:34 Glorious fall days like today make my heart swell with gratitude and praise for a loving Creator. He made the world on purpose; He created each part of our universe with a plan in mind. Things didn't just happen into existence, they didn't appear as a by-product of something else, they were deliberately spoken into being by the eternal God. [...Read More]

Five Minute Friday: When Seasons Change

This week's Five Minute Friday is about... When Seasons Change I love the changing of the seasons. In fact, I have joked to some people that my favorite time of year is not a specific season, but rather the beginning of each season (although I go kind of crazy for springtime). Isn't it so refreshing when winter grays finally give way to springtime's rainbow of greens, yellows, pinks, and purples? And it feels so relaxing and vacation-like when summer comes around with its heat and bright sunny days. And then, fall creeps in with splashes of color on the trees and breezes to cool the hot earth. And finally winter brings along crisp cold and pure white snow, dazzling the earth in icy [...Read More]

Alleluia!

"I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving... Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them" (Psalm 69:30, 34). The Psalms record verse after verse commanding us to sing to Him, to praise His name, to exalt Him. Elsewhere in the Bible, we are told to sing and make melody in our hearts to the Lord, speaking in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16). So do you sing before Him? Do you lift up your heart and voice in praise to Him? Not just in church, where we have the privilege to worship together with other believers and affirm His greatness publicly - but do you affirm it in your own private [...Read More]

I Sing … of God

I sing the mighty power of God, that made the mountains rise, That spread the flowing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies. I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day; The moon shines full at God’s command, and all the stars obey. I sing the goodness of the Lord, who filled the earth with food, Who formed the creatures through the Word, and then pronounced them good. Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed, where’er I turn my eye, If I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky. There’s not a plant or flower below, but makes Thy glories known, And clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from Thy throne; While all that borrows life from Thee is ever in Thy care; And [...Read More]

Eternity

Preface: Many of you know I write poetry. I also follow several poetry blogs, which provide weekly writing prompts (words, themes, images) for our musing and inspiration. This week, one of them (Sunday Scribblings) provided the word 'eternity' for a prompt. And after musing over the word for a day, I started wondering about eternity past. We often consider eternity future, our own future with God in heaven, but what about eternity in the past, when there was only God? What about eternity past, just before He created the world, before He formed mankind to fellowship with Him? What about His foreknowledge during that eternity, when He knew what He would create, but He also knew how His [...Read More]

Hymn to a Gracious Sovereign

Have you ever considered the great resources we have within the pages of our hymnals? Have you ever thought of using one as a part of your personal quiet time with God? Although the lyrics of our hymns are not divinely inspired on the level of Scripture, the authors must have had some divine guidance as they penned the words. Many of them are based on specific Scripture passages, while others reference some of the doctrines we believe in. Still others are obvious songs of praise to our God or affirmations of our dedication to Him. There are hymns for just about every occasion. We have hymns for Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and patriotic holidays. We have hymns that extol the virtues of [...Read More]

Creation

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?  Tell me, if you have understanding.” Job 38:4 Who among us can know how the universe was formed out of nothing, how mankind was made out of dust, how woman was formed from man? Who among us can know the great depths of the ocean or the heights of the heavens, the distance from east to west or the vast expanse of space? Who among us can know what holds the stars in space or the number of the sands on the seashores, or even the number of hairs on our heads? Who among us can know, for who among us was there when the world was formed, there when God created the heavens and the earth? [...Read More]
