Not the mother, certainly,
swollen with tender womb,
divine treasure buried within her,
promised bearer of the holy Baby.
Not the father either, the chosen
provider for the coming Child,
appointed to guide Him throughout
His fleeting days of childhood.
Neither the shepherds, those blessed
and dazzled by celestial choirs,
eager to worship their infant King
who lay in a familiar stable stall.
Nor the eastern noblemen, who
relinquished familial comforts,
journeying to distant Bethlehem,
courageously seeking their king’s King.
Neither you nor I – blessed recipients
and active participants in that ancient
and unforgotten Nativity – privileged
to worship at both cradle and cross.
