“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand” (Psalm 37:23-24, KJV).
Can I paraphrase?
The path and direction of our lives are established by the LORD of Lords, the One who formed you and me out of nothing before the world was ever created, the One who loved us so unconditionally that He gave up His life for us. He has planned out every step of our lives, every circumstance. And if we are focused on Him and Him alone, we will find joy in His plan! We will be overflowing with His peace and delight, when we live according to His guidance and instruction. However, there will be rugged and rocky slopes along the way, steep pathways that may cause us to stumble – especially when we allow ourselves to be distracted by the ‘greener pastures’ on the other side or the easy paths that others follow. And yes, we will stumble. Yes, we may fall. But even as the apostle Paul gave testimony, “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).
The One who created everything and sustains everything holds us in the palm of His hand. He provides us with safety and deliverance. We may stumble, but He graciously sustains us through it. We may trip and even fall, but He delivers us through it. He does not leave on our own, without any help. He, the King of the universe, provides each of us with personal assistance, tailored to our individual weaknesses and needs.
What an amazing promise for those who call Him their Savior!
