“I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving… Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them” (Psalm 69:30, 34).

The Psalms record verse after verse commanding us to sing to Him, to praise His name, to exalt Him. Elsewhere in the Bible, we are told to sing and make melody in our hearts to the Lord, speaking in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16).

So do you sing before Him? Do you lift up your heart and voice in praise to Him? Not just in church, where we have the privilege to worship together with other believers and affirm His greatness publicly – but do you affirm it in your own private worship time?

Consider the following excerpt from the well-known hymn, All Creatures of our God and King. Consider how all of creation praises its Creator. And take time to sing it before God in prayer; take time to worship Him in song.

All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing
Alleluia! Alleluia!*

Thou burning sun with golden beam,
Thou silver moon with softer gleam!

Thou rushing wind that art so strong
Ye clouds that sail in Heaven along,

O praise Him! Alleluia!

Thou rising moon, in praise rejoice,
Ye lights of evening, find a voice!

Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
Make music for thy Lord to hear,
O praise Him! Alleluia!

Thou fire so masterful and bright,
That givest man both warmth and light.
And all ye men of tender heart,
Forgiving others, take your part,
O sing ye! Alleluia!

Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,
Praise God and on Him cast your care!

Let all things their Creator bless,
And worship Him in humbleness,
O praise Him! Alleluia!

Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
And praise the Spirit, Three in One!

O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

(All Creatures of Our God and King, Francis of Assisi)
*Alleluia: an exclamation of praise to God
