Spirit Filled Homes (Guest Post)

Today I have the pleasure to introduce a friend of mine from Massachusetts, Sarah Beals. She is a sweet encouragement and a Christ-centered lady who stays busy raising her children, loving her husband, and writing edifying and thought-provoking posts over at Joy-Filled Days.

What Does A Spirit Filled Home Look Like?

What if I told you that I had secretly recorded your life this past weekend and wanted to upload it to facebook for all of your friends to see? Suppose I could record not only your words, but your thoughts as well, to be played out for all of your friends.

Would the recording tell the tale of someone who is filled with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs? Would we see that your thoughts were God-filled and centered and full of thankfulness? Or would you be humiliated as we watched on as you indulged in anger, wrath, ill will toward others, etc…

In other words, are you a spirit filled Christian? Let’s match up our life and thought life with Ephesians.

Ephesians is an extremely practical, biblical book. It answers so many of the big life questions we have and gives us instruction for how to live.

It tells us:

Who we are in Christ. (1:3-14; 2:13-14, 2:19-22)
What we were before Christ. (2:1-3; 4:17-23; 2:11-12)
What we have in Christ. (1:15-20; 3:14-20)
How we should live as Christians. (4:1-16; 4:22-32; 5:1-33; 6:1-18)

As a young married woman, I was always excited when I saw a Christian family who was doing the right thing. With so many dysfunctional things in this world, an intact, God honoring family was a breath of fresh air. The Christian home is a little glimpse of heaven on earth, and that is exactly what it is supposed to picture.

Well, my friend, if you are looking for help with the spirit led life and are curious about what your next step should be, take a peek with me into what the spirit led home looks like from an earthly standpoint. {pulling back the curtains and peeking into this lovely home. :)}

“Therefore, do not be foolish,
but understand what the will of the Lord is…
be filled with the Spirit,
addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart…
Giving thanks always for everything…
Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ,
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church.
Children, obey your parents in the Lord.
Be strong in the Lord, and put on His armor.
Praying at all time in the Spirit.”

So back to my initial question, would your recording look like this? Then, if not, can we say that we are truly living a spirit filled life?
You, like me probably have some work to do. And by God’s grace, we can put off the old ways of life, renew our minds, and put on what is God honoring.

Because you know what? As embarrassing as it would be to have our friends see our thoughts played out on the big screen before them, we have a God who always sees, right into the thoughts and motives of our hearts. God sees it all.

Sarah Beals has three favorite mottos: “Grace is for sinners,” “It is all of grace,” and “Grace will lead me home.” That pretty much sums up her past, present and future. She and Peter have been married for 20 years and have five children, ages 8 through 18. She enjoys spending time with her family, reading, watercolor, coffee and writing at www.joyfilleddays.wordpress.com.
