Five Minute Friday: Connected

Every week, the Gypsy Mama brings us a word to ponder, an idea to muse over, to a topic to write about for five minutes straight without editing or backtracking or thinking too hard. This week, the Five Minute Friday topic is:

I think of saints from ages past- Abraham, David, Mary and Joseph, Paul, John. Of missionaries in this church age- Mary Slessor, David Livingstone, Gladys Alward, Amy Carmichael, Jim Elliot. Of great preachers- the Wesleys, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon, Andrew Murray. And I marvel how we are all connected through the same Spirit, cleansed with the same blood, recipients of the same grace, children of the same Father. We are all Abraham’s descendants, whether by blood (Jewish) or by adoption (Gentiles).

I think of Christians who are alive today, all over the world. Some I know in person. Some I know only online. Some I only know through others, through the word of their prayers or mention of their needs. But I know we are all connected as well. All who trust in Jesus Christ are headed down the same road, toward the same heavenly home. All who follow Him have the same Bible with the same promises and commands, the same God to whom we pray, the same Spirit dwelling in our hearts.

I think of that “mystic sweet communion” we have with all these saints, from every age and every location, since time and the world began. I smile, because though my ancestor’s ancestors are now only dust on this earth, their souls are alive and sustained with our Father. I smile, because I will see them some day, and we will fall as one before our Redeemer. We will collectively worship our Creator and sing praise to our King. We will be connected not just through history but through our physical proximity and spiritual unity.

What a mystery, what a miracle…

The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord,
She is His new creation by water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her and for her life He died.

She is from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won,
With all her sons and daughters who, by the Master’s hand
Led through the deathly waters, repose in Eden land.

(excerpts from The Church’s One Foundation, Samuel J. Stone)
