Ever Feel Like You’re Drowning?

So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, ‘Lord, save me.’ Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’

Matthew 14:29-31

I had a rough week. I struggled with trusting God fully, with being completely surrendered to His will for my health. I shared with you a little about the other day, talking about How to Flourish in Life. I wish we could just learn our lessons and never be tested on them again… I wish it were easier.

But this is the life we have. This is the effect of sin in the world. We struggle. We lose ground. We tread water for days on end, never making progress or getting anywhere.

We jump out of the boat, ready to follow the Lord wherever He goes – and immediately we start to sink. Just like Peter. We feel the winds of trouble whipping around us. We feel the waves of discontentment lapping at our feet. Storms grow and surround us, and we look away from Christ.

We doubt.

And that’s the whole crux of our sin problem, isn’t it? We doubt that God is there, watching and caring for us. We doubt that He’s really in control of every single thing that happens. We doubt that He will get us through those stormy patches.

And we start drowning in our own insecurities. We trip over our worries, flounder in our lack of courage. We lose confidence and start to sink in the ocean of doubt.

But we don’t have to sink!

God is there, waiting with stretched-out hand. He longs to uphold us, to carry us through the rough patches. His strength is enough to buoy us up – more than enough, actually.

His strength is most manifested when we feel the weakest. His power is most known when we feel the most helpless. His beauty is most glorious when we are most overwhelmed with the ugliness of our sin, the scarlet shame of our doubt. He is greatest when we are most incapable.

Oh we of little faith, why do we doubt?

So that’s what I’ve been learning this week. How about you? What is God teaching you? I’d love to read about it! Take a moment to share a comment about what you’re learning from the Word.
