How to Flourish in Life

I woke up feeling discouraged this morning. I’ve been going through another rough week health-wise (nothing serious, just a few lingering things), and am impatient to feel better. And I was moping around, feeling sorry for myself and whining to God, and He gently nudged me and reminded me: focus on something else.

As in, stop thinking about myself and get busy!

And then I grabbed my Bible to do my daily reading, and found a common thread running through the verses: the benefits of trusting in God. You might wonder whether that actually relates to feeling lousy, but it does.

You see, if I want to be in control of how my body feels, then I am not trusting God’s control. If I want to feel differently than I do, I am not fully surrendered to His plan for me.  By pitying myself and whining, I am essentially rejecting His goodness and mercy. I am denying all the other ways He has blessed me. I am ignoring His promises and trying to live my own way.

But what are those promises? What does God’s Word offer to those who trust fully in Him? Here’s just a smattering of verses about it:

“The LORD is my strength and my shield;
in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.”

Psalm 28:7

“Steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.”
Psalm 32:10

“The one who trusts in the LORD will be enriched.”
Proverbs 28:25

“Whoever trusts in the LORD is safe.”
Proverbs 29:25

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.
He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

Jeremiah 17:7-8

Strength and a shield, a song in our hearts, steadfast love, enrichment, safety, lack of fear, steadfastness and fruitfulness – all these things are promised to the one who simply trusts in the Lord! Talk about flourishing!

How can we refuse such great gifts from the hand of God? Why do we refuse them?
