Our Story, Part 1: Written by God

Five years ago, my husband and I said our vows, and enjoyed our very first kiss. But more on that later. For now – I thought it was time that I shared our love story. A story that could only have been crafted by the greatest Author of all.

Our Love Story, Part 1

Hiking in Jones Gap State Park,
just before we started officially dating in 2005.

We don’t actually remember the first time we met. And we didn’t fall madly in love anytime soon after it. All we know is, we met sometime during our very first semester in college, probably around a meal in the Dining Common. I was the people person who would fill my table with friends, and he was the quiet guy who sat by himself. But we had mutual friends, and we eventually met enough to say “hi” as we passed on the sidewalk.

So we knew each other’s names but that was about it. We barely talked. We definitely didn’t go on any dates. In fact, I went on dates with other guys. I even dated another guy pretty seriously for a while. And then, in the fall of my junior year, that other guy broke up with me…

I have to admit, I enjoyed the freedom of being single again. I had lots of guy friends, and I could do stuff with any of them, just as friends. I could spend more time with my roommates and my other girl-friends.

In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I didn’t want to like anyone. Because I was content, and happy, and free to spend my time how I wanted.

But I was taking a Bible doctrines class that semester, and wanted a friend who could answer some theology questions. And there was one guy I knew, who seemed like he’d be a good choice. So one night while I was studying in my dorm room, I got on instant messenger and wrote him a quick message.

And the rest, as they say, is history…

We slowly started talking – mostly about Bible stuff. I enjoy reading theology, but I really need someone to discuss it with. It’s kind of a big thing for me. And the more theology we discussed, the more we got to know each other.

Pretty soon, we were meeting each other for lunch. Just as friends. But those lunches started lasting longer and longer… and becoming more and more frequent. And then I found out something that made my heart jump sky-high: he felt called to minister in the Western United States too!

Ironically, we had both participated in missions teams to the West during our first summer break – same time, same location, completely different teams. God had used my missions trip in my own life, to hear His call for me to return there someday.

Apparently, James had the same experience. And the same call.
And that’s when God hit me with a virtual 2×4.

You see, I always kind of knew that I’d end up falling in love with a guy who was first just a good friend, because that’s the only way I can really be myself. And to realize that this guy, who answered all my theology questions, and whom I enjoyed spending time with, and who was totally single, felt the same calling as I did for future ministry… that just floored me.

And when I realized that, I went immediately to God in prayer. I didn’t want to rush anything. I was enjoying being single, remember? I didn’t want a relationship with anyone. I even made up a list of qualities I thought a husband should have, hoping to wait a little longer.

James met every one of those qualities. Now I just had to wait for him to get the memo…

  1. Love hearing how God worked in your life and my brother’s life! It means even more to me as you are now part of our family!!!!

    Love ya!

    Jenn

  2. Hmmm… We have another thing in common! Our first kiss was saved for our wedding day, too. 🙂 Looking forward to part 2!

  3. Very fun! If you ever get a chance, you should go read “Our Story” over on my blog – I also married the man who was my friend FIRST. Best way to go in my opinion. 🙂 And, although we originally planned to save our first kiss for the wedding (didn’t happen), he IS the only man I’ve ever kissed, and (it’s a long story but) I’m only the second girl who has kissed him. We’ll leave it at that, eh? 😉 Looking forward to your next installment!

  4. That’s funny. 🙂

My wife and I started our relationship online having conversations about all kinds of stuff… I remember Theology and music coming up alot. 🙂

  5. Wow! Love this. God is so good…all the time. I love hearing other people’s “How did you meet?” stories.
