Real Life Stuff – Liebster Blog Award

I know, I know. You’re probably getting information overload about me! I went so long without sharing much “real life stuff” and now here’s the fourth post in only three weeks. I promise, that’s slowing down, and I’ll only do another of these the next time it’s raining poodles in Belgium on Tuesday at 5. 😉

But for now, here’s one more post of “Real Life Stuff.” And a special thanks to Carrie’s Busy Nothings for tagging me in her Liebster Blog post. {And if you haven’t visited her blog yet, go check it out. I’ll be right here.}

Liebster is German for {so I am told} sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome. The Liebster Award goes to up-and-coming bloggers who have fewer than 200 followers.

1. Each person must share 11 things about themselves. {Optional}
2. Answer your 11 assigned questions; and create 11 new questions to be answered by those you tag.
3. Choose 11 people/blogs and link to them in your post.
4. Go to their page and tell them.
5. No tag backs!

I’ve just shared three hefty posts with things about me – here, here, and here – so I’ll forego the first 11 things. Here are the questions Carrie asked:

Q1 – What’s your favorite book from childhood?
I read everything I could get my hands on (which was a LOT)… but don’t really remember picking favorites. Weird, huh?

Q2 – What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
I have two – my first study Bible (high school), and my engagement ring (Christmas 2006).

Q3 – What have you splurged on recently?
Sightseeing in Charleston – Fort Sumter, USS Yorktown, USS Laffey

Q4 – You’re going out with friends, do you wear- skirt, dress, shorts, or slacks?
Nice jeans, if I can get away with it! But I do believe in dressing appropriately, so I’ll wear khakis or a casual skirt if the situation calls for it.

Q5 – Pearls or diamonds?
I don’t like pearls… but I’m not into showy sparkles either. A simple diamond pendant or turquoise strand will do for me.

Q6 – Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts coffee?
Dunkin Donuts!! But you already knew that, right? 😉

Q7 – Favorite Olympic event?
I don’t watch much of the Olympics, but when I do, I prefer the winter sports – like skiing, speed skating, hockey, and the Jamaican bobsled team. {Bonus points if you can name that movie!}

Q8 – Do you have a favorite blog?
I recently found a “kindred spirit” in Choosing Joy Daily.

Q9 – If you could have any car, what would you want?
A heavy-duty Chevy truck. Diesel. Classic red.

Q10 – If I picked up your favorite pizza, what toppings would I find on it?
Mmmm… fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, fresh tomatoes. And a drizzle of olive oil across the top.

Q11 – What color is your kitchen?
Coffee themed, with different shades of brown (tan, wood, etc) and green accents.

Bloggers I’m tagging:
{Okay, some have more than 200 followers, but I’m still finding who’s out there in the blogosphere!}

My questions – for anyone who feels like playing along:

1. What is your opinion of coffee?
2. Do attend church regularly? Where?
3. Morning person or night owl?
4. Do you regularly read/watch/listen to the news?
5. What do you think about football season?
6. Favorite types of books to read?
7. Do you enjoy doing any outdoor activities?
8. What’s your favorite type of cheese?
9. How do you express your creativity?
10. What magazines do you regularly read?
11. What’s the last thing you memorized?

I’d love to get to know all of you, readers and bloggers both, a little better! So leave a comment with your answers – or link up a post with your own Liebster Award. I’ll leave the linky up for a month, so there’s plenty of time to come back to it!

  1. Q7: Cool Runnings. I went to see it with my parents when it came out. 🙂

    As for YOUR questions:

    1. Love it – but it has to be good. No instant (eewww!), no Folgers or Maxwell House.
    2. Yes, at a Christian & Missionary Alliance church.
    3. Morning person by developed habit, night owl by nature.
    4. Sometimes, but when I do, I have to remind myself that “this world is not my home”.
    5. Not a fan of football (though my Dad was the captain of his HS football team).
    6. Mystery (Agatha Christie’s “Poirot” & Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes” top the list)
    7. Hmmm…I’m not “outdoorsy”, but I like swimming in a pool.
    8. Fresh goat cheese…Mmmmmm!!!
    9. I blog.
    10. I don’t. If I’m going to make time to read, I’d rather read a book.
    11. Passwords. 🙂

    1. 1 – Agreed, no instant. However, we do keep Folgers on hand because it’s affordable.
2 – Sometime you’ll have to share more about your church with me. I’ve heard of CMA but am not very familiar with the basic doctrines and practices.
      4 – Yes, definitely. Amen.
10 – I too prefer books, except for that stack in the bathroom… which is where you’ll find our magazines.
      11 – Useful, for sure! 😉

  2. Fun!! Ok, here we go.
    1. Coffee is great!! As long as it is loaded with chocolate and sugar. Therefore, I don’t have it often.
    2. Yes, we go to Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, VA as often as my health allows.
3.Night owl. Definitely a night owl.
    4. I’m not a big fan of the news. I like happy news, so I watch Food Network. Someone in our house always fills me in, though!
    5. Love football season! That means Fall is quickly approaching!
    6. I love Christian (or clean) mystery/suspense books.
    7. I’m not an outdoor gal, but I do enjoy sitting on my front porch in the evenings!
    8. Fresh mozzarella. Yum!
    9. I enjoy making cards and baking for others, along with blogging.
    10. Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Living, Taste of Home, Romantic Homes, Home Life… Love interior decorating and cooking – pretty much what I read magazine wise!
    11. Ephesians 6.

    1. 1 – So, basically, dessert mocha? 🙂
4 – Sounds like me, but I prefer blog-news. Or friend-news. So I stick with social media.
5 – College or pro? Favorite teams?
10 – I read BHG too! And get the Taste of Home emails, but haven’t subscribed to that in a while.
      11 – Great chapter 🙂

      1. 1 – Yes. Pretty much. haha! 🙂
        4 – Social media/friend news for me, too. 🙂
5 – College football. Texas A&M (daughter of two Aggies) and Liberty University. 🙂
        10 – Yay! Love BHG!
        Too fun!

  3. 1. Coffee is a morning must have!!!
    2. Yes. Sovereign Grace Church in our hometown.
    3. Night owl since I’ve had kids (it’s that peace & quiet thing!).
    4. No, I’m pretty sporadic about it.
    5. Football is a foreign language to me!
    6. Oh, I have to stay away from books! Once I get my nose into a good one my children become motherless & my husband becomes wifeless…I can’t put a good book down!! lol
    7. I love hiking!! Fall & winter are my favorite times to go.
    8. Fresh mozzarella!
    9. Um…crafts w/ my kids? I don’t consider myself real creative!
    10. My sons Highlights magazine…lol.
    11. 2. Cor. 4:17

    1. 1 – Me too!
6 – That sounds vaguely familiar (minus the kid-part)….
7 – Me too! I’m so excited for cooler weather… ready to get my hiking shoes out. Do you have any favorite places to hike?
      9 – That’s creative, for sure!
11 – Just looked that verse up. Excellent reminder and a great one to have memorized!
      Thanks so much for playing!

      1. We rarely do the same trail more than once. I think what I really enjoy about hiking is the unknown of the trail…if that makes sense. You never know what you are going to see around each bend or over each hill! We did find a place last winter in northwest CT that was absolutely beautiful and returned a couple of times! I’m looking forward to going back again this winter!!

      2. Yes, I totally get that. It’s the same reason I don’t like going out & coming back on the same trail. I want something new, that I haven’t seen before.

  4. I will creatively express myself with words, as is usual. More specifically, I will express myself by answering your questions in a story form. As a person who loves nothing more than getting up early for a good and brisk walk, I have no need for coffee. I do enjoy a cool and refreshing iced mocha in the afternoon, though. What with my regular attendance at Grace Community Church, and being involved in the college ministry AND pursuing my passion for reading (I am currently reading a whole slew of humorous short stories after reading in Douglas Wilson’s Wordsmithy that it is imperative for an aspiring writer to read everything he can get his hands on-fiction and non-fiction, serious and funny, styles you want to imitate and other writing styles) . That’s a run-on sentence, and I don’t know how to fix it, so I’ll just continue and pretend it never happened. I am also reading Deuteronomio (that’s Deuteronomy in Spanish-I recently bought a Spanish Bible) and memorizing verses from that. I just finished reading The Power of a Positive Friend, too, and I’m reading Putting the Amazing Back into Grace with some friends, and I have a book called Saturday Night that-no joke-I only read on Saturday nights. I have no time for either news or football, or magazines; although I think I will soon be published in a local magazine. I was actually considering going to a bookstore to look at magazines today (I like to leaf through Walking), but I think I won’t. I’ll spend the time writing on my blog instead.

    1. What a fun way to respond! I enjoyed getting to know you a little better. And I agree – a nice brisk walk in the morning is a wonderful way to wake up and start the day! I’ve also read similar advice to what you mentioned from Douglas Wilson. Read everything you can, because it will all come out in your writing.
Where are going to be published? That’s super exciting!! I hope you share it on your blog!

      1. I will be published in The Magazine of Santa Clarita. I’ve been published there many times. My husband encouraged me to start writing for them again. I will just send blog posts, so it will already be on my blog. The best compliment was when a friend of mine (who didn’t know my last name) had my article on her refrigerator. Also, when I worked at the local library, I wrote an article about Solomon and wisdom and how much I loved helping people gain knowledge, and a lady came into the library looking for me. I felt famous!

  5. I forgot an end parenthesis. That’s gonna bug me all day.

    1. It would bug me too. But I could fix it, if you’d like! 😉

      1. Feel free to edit!

  6. Elizabeth, thanks for the shout out! You have been one of my most encouraging new blogging friends during this past month and I am so thankful for you! I hope to get a chance to come back and answer your fun questions sometime tomorrow, but had to stop by and at least give you quick thank-you tonight! So, THANK YOU. 🙂

    1. Aww, you are so welcome! 🙂

  7. This is fun! Thanks, Elizabeth.

    1. What is your opinion of coffee? Love it! I have two a day with creamer.
    2. Do attend church regularly? Where? Yes. Right now, the Army Chapel.
    3. Morning person or night owl? Morning. Always have been.
    4. Do you regularly read/watch/listen to the news? No. I am an NPR junkie. I enjoy listening to them when I am in the car.
    5. What do you think about football season? Hmmm…I like football, especially college. I enjoy watching a game or two. But, I am definitely not a fanatic, and I don’t follow any NFL teams.
    6. Favorite types of books to read? That is a tough one. I love lots of different types of books. If I had to choose my favorites (right now) are memoirs.
    7. Do you enjoy doing any outdoor activities? Yes, many. We are an outdoor family. Hiking, biking, fishing, swimming the streams, lakes, tent camping, gardening.
    8. What’s your favorite type of cheese? I am really enjoying Manchego cheese right now. A Spanish cheese, it is best a room temperature. Pricey, but so worth it! I love cheese!

    10. What magazines do you regularly read? Better Homes and Gardens.
    11. What’s the last thing you memorized? My new telephone number and street address.

      10 – Me too! 🙂
11 – Definitely good things to know 🙂

      Thanks for playing along!

  8. Okay, here we go!
    1. What is your opinion of coffee?
I love it! Sometimes, I worry I love it a little too much though. Afterall, it’s probably not good for any of us to lean on coffee to get us through a long day, when we should be leaning on the Holy Spirit, right?
    2. Do attend church regularly? Where?
Every Sunday at the loving, lovely, love-filled Parma Baptist Church.
    3. Morning person or night owl?
Having a child has turned me into a morning person, of course, though I was always a morning person until college night life converted me to owl form. I’m reverting to my childhood on this one. Hello 6 AM!
    4. Do you regularly read/watch/listen to the news?
I enjoy keeping up with current events, though I don’t always get to do it as much as I’d like. A regular look at the news app on my phone is usually all I get these days.
    5. What do you think about football season?
LOVE LOVE LOVE football season, though we are strictly NFL followers. I went to school in Minnesota, and there I learned to love the ever-terrible Vikings. I’m actually wearing a Vikings shirt as I type this.
    6. Favorite types of books to read?
I’m a fan of a lot of fiction. I love John Grisham novels, and I’ve torn through many a popular fantasy series.
    7. Do you enjoy doing any outdoor activities?
So, so much. You name it, I probably love it or want to try it. Hiking, boating and water sports, other sports, camping, I love them all.
    8. What’s your favorite type of cheese?
    Pepper Jack.
    9. How do you express your creativity?
Writing and photography mostly, but I also love to paint and draw.
    10. What magazines do you regularly read?
None, really. Occassionally Better Homes and Gardens.
    11. What’s the last thing you memorized?
    Ephesians 2:1-10

    1. How fun! Thanks for playing along!

5 – Yay, another NFL fan! I don’t hate the Vikings, but I’d rather cheer for the Pats (I grew up near Boston).
6 – I’ve read a lot of Grisham. My favorite is “Playing for Pizza.”
      10 – Me too!
      11 – Wonderful passage!
