How are you doing with your goals for 2014?
I hope you haven’t forgotten about them… or given up on them. Because it’s only been a few months! So if you’re starting to slip, now is the perfect time to get back on track. Forget about all those days you didn’t make progress on your goals, and get busy working on them now. It’s better to end well after a rocky start, then to start with a bang and fizzle out completely!
Or maybe you have been plugging away at your goals for the last three months, but you’re starting to get discouraged at the slow speed of progress. Maybe you’re doing the three-steps-forward, two-steps-back thing. Or maybe you feel like you’re just barely treading water…
But remember that slow progress is better than no progress. Keep plugging away, little by little and inch by inch. Because goals aren’t accomplished overnight (usually), but rather one choice at a time. tweet this
Keep on keeping on!
So how am I doing, you ask?
Ehh, mediocre. I think that little pep talk was just what I needed to get re-focused on my goals. As a reminder, I’m focusing on seven disciplines this year, rather than traditional goals. Here’s how those disciplines are going:
In-Depth Bible Reading/Study – So far I’ve studied Acts, Hebrews, and Thessalonians, and currently I’m working through Luke. Next on the list is Job – not my favorite book, but one I feel God nudging me to study. Hopefully I’ll be at least knee-deep in it when the next goals check-in rolls around!
Scripture Memory – I’ll be honest, I am struggling to stay disciplined with this one. I’m trying to review previously-memorized passages once per week, but there’s been a few weeks that I haven’t reviewed anything. I am plugging away at finishing James 3, but that’s going rather slowly too. Anyone feel like being an accountability partner for this one?
Prayer – I’m thankful to report that I’ve made some steady improvement in this area! It’s a constant struggle to do the work of intercession, but it’s always worth it to see the fruit of that work! I did pare down my prayer list, because I can focus better on praying for a select few everyday, than trying to pray for everyone I know, every single day. But baby steps, right?
Relationships – Oh, I am thrilled to see some progress in this one! It’s been so wonderful to reconnect with a few good friends, and to make a point of keeping up with them. I’m not a phone person, but I’m seeing my effort rewarded by actually enjoying these phone calls – and initiating them more frequently! And I even got to visit 2 wonderful friends in Virginia a few weeks ago — something I might not have planned if it weren’t for this goal. On the other hand, I haven’t done much to develop not-quite-friendships yet. I need to make a point to work on that over the next few months…
Health – I am definitely maintaining and learning, but I haven’t put much focused effort into this yet. Hopefully with the warmer weather, I can increase my activity level. On the other hand, I have made a few more switches to homemade cleaners and body-care products! I do need to be more intentional about continuing to learn, however, so I can better explain and define those things to others.
Reading – For once, I’m actually behind on my reading goal! I’ve only read 17 of 70 books for the year… probably because I’ve intentionally limited my fiction — in fact, I’ve only read 2 new novels this year (though I’ve also re-read a few old favorites, which don’t count towards my goal). But I am thoroughly enjoying focusing on biographies! And I’ve been able to truly savor my reading choices this year, rather then skimming through books I don’t really care about.
Writing – Unfortunately, I’m kind of lagging behind in this area. I have been keeping up with blogging, but I’m at a standstill on my next book project. And I’m not sure whether it’s a God-directed standstill, or something I just need to buckle down and work through somehow. Any encouragement would be greatly appreciated!
So basically, I need to continue what I’m doing in several areas — and get busy working on Scripture memory, developing new relationships, reading more, and writing regularly. I think that’s feasible — with God’s help, of course!
