“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God . . . Evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.”
2 Timothy 3:1-4, 13 ESV
These verses kept running through my mind as I heard about the stomach-turning celebration of abortion in New York this week. If unborn babies are growing, then that means they are alive. And if they are in the womb of a human, that means they are a living person. Which means destroying their existence is murder.
And murder is murder, whether a person is unborn, on their deathbed, or anywhere in between. God is the Creator of every.single.person and ONLY He has the authority to say when a life should end. We have NO RIGHT, not even over our own life, to choose that endpoint! [Side note: This is also a valid argument against the “right” to commit suicide or live a nihilistic lifestyle — if our bodies are not our own, but their Maker’s, then what right to do we have to waste or destroy them?]
Yet, as we water down the literal creation of the universe by God — turning 24 hour days into years and blending creation and evolution, ignoring the hard-to-grasp statements of God’s Word — then we also lose sight of God’s ultimate ownership of every soul who ever lives. HIS creation. HE made us. Therefore HE owns us, and therefore it is up to HIM alone to appoint the time of our death.
And yet, we are all utterly depraved. As sickening as the Reproductive Health Act is — and its ensuing celebration — it should not shock us. Because every single one of us harbor such a desire to rebel against God’s laws. But for His grace, we could be right there with those blinded men and women, furthering the agenda of our greatest enemy.
It is absolutely heartbreaking to watch, yet we are told that this evil will continue to grow . . . that deception will overtake the hearts and minds of millions, and they will become more and more enslaved by the god of this world, the god of death, and the allure of sin’s power.
My heart breaks for the millions of women who have been and will be deceived by these “evil men and impostors,” lied to and betrayed and sometimes even coerced into murdering their unborn children. Women who just want to feel good about themselves, who seek to shift the stigma of death into something normal and congratulatory, claiming authority to destroy something they don’t want.
My heart breaks for the parents who will never know those sweet, precious image-bearers of their Creator . . . never know what God can do through the life of a broken, helpless, even unwanted child. Never consider the idea of adoption, giving their child a chance to live despite their own shame or selfishness. Never really understand the consequences of their choice, because people around them keep silent about it.
My heart breaks for the lawmakers and medical professionals, and those who influence and educate them. Those who are so deceived and blinded that they can’t help being used by Satan to evangelize his plans. They are lost. They are headed to an eternity without God, where they will come face to face with the horror of what they have done. I hate what they choose to do with all my heart! But it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of a living God. Their punishment will be every bit as horrific as their crime — a certainty that should drive us to pray even harder for their souls. If even one repents, and becomes as prominent a leader for God’s agenda as they are for the devil’s . . . just think of the difference they could make!
I challenge you to pray, not just for those considering abortion, but also for all those trying to push its agenda.
The lawmakers. The medical professionals. The general population who have no idea what’s it like to murder your own child. The people so blinded by the devil’s lies that they can’t even acknowledge God’s ownership, and don’t understand the realities of their “freedom to choose.”
Let your soul be stirred to action and speak out against it boldly. But even more than that, get down on your knees and pour your heart out on their behalf. Weep and sweat and pray as if your life depended on it. Because somebody’s eternal destiny just might depend on it.
