Peace in the Midst of Your Storm

Wildfires raging out of control in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. Catastrophic record-breaking flooding in Texas. Severe threats from Irma across Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. How can you find peace when you lift up your eyes and all you see is orange sky and smoke-covered sun? When you wade through chest-high water to find your home of thirty years destroyed beyond repair? When injury and loss capture every waking moment? Life gets turned upside-down and there’s nothing anyone can do to make things right again. No amount of time or money can replace what's been lost. No amount of comfort can fill that emptiness of grief. How can there be peace in the midst of [...Read More]

In Search of True Peace

Let's face it, we live in a stress-filled world. We excel at being chronic worriers. We fill our minds with anxious thoughts of everything that might go wrong. Our souls are less than tranquil. We have all these pressures piled on us. Getting our next paycheck, keeping the car running smoothly, preparing for bad weather, following politics, paying for healthcare, fighting illness and exhaustion... And then there's the holiday season, when we face an unwritten competition to do everything "just right."  We're supposed decorate a picture-perfect house, play the perfect hostess, find the perfect gifts for everyone, send the perfect Christmas cards, and attend everything with a perfect [...Read More]

Let me play you a song…

I've played the piano since my sixth birthday. In fact, piano lessons were a much anticipated birthday gift that year. My older brother plays, and apparently when I was little, I wanted to be "just like him." Well, I soon fell in love the piano for its own sake. My high school years passed with many, many hours at the keyboard. I played for church services, school programs, competitions, and just for fun. I learned to pour out my heart on 88 keys. I still love playing, although I don't spend quite as much time at it now. And I definitely still pour my heart into it. Today, I was playing an arrangement of Like a River Glorious by Dan Forrest, and the beauty of the music simply overwhelmed [...Read More]

Do Not Worry About Tomorrow

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life... Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to his life? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.     If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little [...Read More]

Master, the Tempest Is Raging!

Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side... And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, 'Save us, Lord; we are perishing.' And he said to them, 'Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?' Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, 'What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?' Matthew 8:18, 23-27   Praying peace for you in the midst of crazy [...Read More]
